But that’s not stopping the Transportation Security Administration from testing a self-service screening system at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas later this month. “Several TSOs are present in the self-service screening lanes,” he told CNN in an email. “To be clear, this is not about replacing TSOs or reducing the number of TSOs,” which is currently 50,000. According to TSA, the busiest day ever for TSA screening operations at the city’s airport was on October 29, 2023, when the agency screened 103,400 passengers. “The number of airline passengers continues to increase year-over-year, creating a need for innovative screening solutions that enhance transportation security and make traveling more efficient,” said Dimitri Kusnezov, Department of Homeland Security under secretary for science and technology.

A self-service TSA screening model may be making its way to an airport near you. The programs are meant to expedite screening while improving safety, the DHS said in a press release. AdvertisementAs officials at the Transportation Security Administration grapple with air travel resuming at pre-pandemic levels, the Department of Homeland Security is testing out self-service screening options. "Like self-ordering kiosks at fast food and sit-down restaurants, self-service screening allows passengers in the Trusted Traveler Program to complete the security screening process on their own," John Fortune, the program's manager, said in the press release. AdvertisementThe program will allow passengers to move through the screening "at their own pace" while minimizing in-person contact between officers and passengers, Fortune said.

☆ German energy regulator expects lower power reserve needs this winter

The Federal Network Agency, called Bundesnetzagentur, said it had cut the amount of winter power capacity needed in reserve for the 2023/24 season by 44% from 2022/23 to 4,616 megawatts (MW). Also, the slow pace of network expansion is hampering the delivery of wind power from the north of Germany to the industrial south. That amount of capacity could be raised by combining plants operating regularly in the market with domestic and foreign network reserve capacities and the "winter" reserve, it said. Under the network reserve schemes, Germany can draw year-round on domestic plants that were registered for closure but declared system-relevant. Some power plants abroad will also be contracted under one-off agreements, where a relevant tender runs until May 15.

The natural regulator, the Bundesnetzagentur has planning authority over a total of 7,300 km of grid. It reports to the economy ministry, which shares the goal of increasing the use of renewable energy and distributing wind energy, concentrated in Germany's north, and solar energy from the south. "The renewable energy generated in the north of the country must be transported," Klaus Mueller, the authority's president, said in a statement. Germany plans a total 14,000 km of high voltage grids, responsibility for which would be shared between the central regulator and state level authorities in co-operation with four transmission grid companies (TSOs). Since the Green Party gained prominence as part of the coalition government installed in late 2021, Berlin has accelerated planning and approval procedures to ease the take-up of renewable power.
